Honoring President Jimmy Carter SSW

So you may have guessed the answer to the question is The Carter Library! As a native Georgia girl and lover of American History, seems like I would be doing a disservice if I didn’t come up with a way to acknowledge President Carter during his birthday month. Jimmy Carter was born in Plains, Georgia 92 years ago! He is the only president born in Georgia.

President Carter, who was our 39th president, served from 1977-1981. He is known for his diplomacy and humanitarian efforts. The Carter Presidential Library and Museum are located in Atlanta, since it is the capital of the state where he was born. You will find a wealth of activity ideas and primary source documents on the http://www.jimmycarterlibrary.gov/ website! There is also a museum in his birthplace, which is part of the National Park Service. Carter Museum in Plains

Jimmy and his wife Rosalynn are both strong advocates of peacekeeping, human rights, and health care access across the globe. President Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. Learn more about his mission here:  Carter Center.  They both still actively participate in Habitat for Humanity , a volunteer organization which provides affordable housing for low-income families.

Did you know that President Carter was even asked to serve as a mediator during a heated dispute amongst Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s children recently? There has been a longstanding feud between the siblings regarding the possession of some of Dr. King’s most treasured mementoes. I think this topic makes for a great debate or opinion writing piece! Read more about that here: President Carter steps in.

President Carter boycotted the 1980 Olympics because of tensions with Russia so he was only involved on a very limited basis. He was set to carry the torch through Plains but ended up traveling out of town. However, I got to see the torch being carried and attended a few events!
